A Talent Development Workshop in Muskegon Heights!
Returning Home: A Black Aggie from Texas A&M University in the Black Community Developing Talent and Building Leaders
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
On April 15th & 16th 2016 a former Heights Tiger, Erin Sweed, will return to Muskegon as an experienced Fashion and Entertainment mogul to help raise money for local events and charities. The Model/Actress and Entrepreneur will host a Talent Development Workshop. Proceeds from the workshop will support the Annual Muskegon Heights Festival in the Park as well as the Gus Macker Basketball Tournament this summer. Talent from the workshop will receive an opportunity to audition and/or become an extra in the upcoming feature film “H-Town The Movie” and possibly win an all-expense paid trip to Houston, TX for the movie release during Super bowl 2017!
The workshop is open to ages 5 to 40 years old in and around the Muskegon County area including sponsorship of several students from the surrounding schools. The focus will be on multiple talents including but not limited to models, actors, dancers, musicians and aspiring industry professionals looking to become hairstylists and makeup artists. There will be 4 sessions and the workshop will end in a showcase for the community including performances and a fashion show. Vendor and Sponsorship opportunities are available. David Fox and the Dream Lucid & the 231 Over Everything team will be a sponsor and major supporter for the event.
Sweed attended Roosevelt, Edgewood and Lindbergh Elementary as well as Muskegon Height Middle & High school. After 9th grade year she went to visit family in Texas and on the last day of her stay she pleaded with her mother to allow her to stay in order to chase her dreams in a place with more opportunity and less crime and distraction. Due to Sweed losing a close friend to gang violence and the justice system at age 14, she made a decision to be part of the change. Once settled in Texas, Sweed signed up for every talent show and fashion show that was financially feasible. It wasn’t until she graduated high school and began to make her own money that she began training. As a young mother at the age of 18 the road was not easy. Three and a half years later she completed her degree at Texas A&M University with a major in Business Administration and minors in communication, psychology and international marketing.
In 2010 Sweed earned a scholarship that sponsored her trip to Europe, traveling to 5 different countries studying culture and international marketing, and left the Texas A & M foundation with this quote, “If you open your arms in acceptance, your basket of opportunity will overflow.” Motivated by Nelson Mandela’s famous quote, “Be the Change you wish to see,” and our current President of the United States, Barack Obama, “Change will not come if we wait for some other person or some other time. We are the ones we’ve been waiting for. We are the change that we seek.”
